Hidden gem near 2 intriguing Late Classic Maya archeological sites. Mark W Boulder.
Overlooking the Petexbatun Lagoon, nestled in tropical lowland forests (almost 100 acres of intact rainforest), Chiminos Island Lodge is a pleasant surprise.
There are 5 cabañas that can sleep 4 - 5 people, quality beds - nice and firm but some give for soft mattress folks. Hot water, deck, decent linens make for a very comfortable stay. Service is outstanding with good fresh & healthy typical plates. The restaurant area has a nice open deck adjacent to relax in hammock or deck chairs.
Birding is outstanding and the highlight for us was seeing 4 of the 5 species of kingfishers (missed the Amazon but some great upclose sightings of Pygmy). Nearby Aguateca Maya site is really interesting and we also visited Dos Pilas and El Ceibal. Dos Pilas is an almost 14 mile trek, hot and challenging.
For Maya enthusiasts I highly recommend Aguateca and El Ceibal. El Ceibal has outstanding tropical forest. So Chiminos Island Lodge is ideal for exploring this area. As typical for lowland areas in the region, some of the infrastructure like trails to cabañas could need some work, but nothing significant to impact the enjoyment of such a nice place.
I highly recommend Chiminos Island Lodge if you enjoy getting off the beaten track, exploring Maya sites, and birdwatching. Access is by boat from Sayaxche and Chiminos pairs nicely with Flores/Tikal, Laguna del Tigre/El Peru, or crossing over to Frontera Corazal/Yaxchilan.
